Interpretations of Cone Beam CT
Imaging for DentoMaxillofacial Trauma Patients

Professor Kaan Orhan

Full time professor Ankara University, Faculty of Dentistry,  Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, Ankara; Turkey.

Concentrations: TMJ, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MaxilloFacial Imaging, MRI Technology, Programming

Dissertation: Comparison of altered signal intensity, position and morphology of the TMJ disk in MR images corrected for variations in surface coil sensitivity.

Description: Cone beam CT (CBCT) produces three-dimensional information on the facial skeleton and teeth and is increasingly being used in many of the dental specialties, including orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, trauma and implantology. With the introduction of CBCT in dentistry is the responsibility for adequate training and education on its utilization to both maximize its diagnostic and therapeutic potential while considering the risk:benefit of ionizing radiation to patients. Moreover, being familiar with anatomy and especially in trauma patients would help patients discover occult diseases and maxillofacial trauma cases earlier.

Participants will have fundamental knowledge of  CBCT imaging, Radiation Dosimetry, and Clinical Guidelines. CBCT anatomy, variation of normal anatomy, CBCT appearances of trauma patients in the dental and maxillofacial region will be given to the participants.

IMPORTANT: The participants should bring their own P.C (windows based computer M.S Windows 7.0 or 8.0) for evaluating the cases in HANDS-ON.  3D rendering software and cases will be provided by the Lecturer.)

Objectives:

  1. CBCT fundamentals (anatomy, variation of normal anatomy of jaws, TMJ.
  2. Selection criteria for CBCT imaging including radiation dose concerns.
  3. An update on radiological anatomy of teeth& jaws relevant to CBCT.
  4. Principles and practice of interpretation of dento-alveolar trauma 3D CBCT.
  5. Use of CBCT in trauma patients with clinical case presentations. (Hands-on)

After the presentation participants will be able to:

  • Assess the need for CBCT imaging , prescribe a scan for their patients and
  • The participants are able to understand the basics of CBCT and understand in which situations CBCT can be beneficial for their daily dental practice in trauma patients.

Direct Esthetic Restoration of Fractured
Anterior Teeth

Dr. Engin Taviloğlu

Having graduated from İstanbul University School of Dentistry in 1984, Engin Taviloğlu continues his studies particularly on field of esthetic dentistry in his private practice in İstanbul-Teşvikiye. He has been lecturing in seminars, giving hands-on courses and performing live case demonstrations on esthetic dentistry and composite applications in particular.

He is the author of AN ATLAS OF COMPOSITE APPLICATIONS and three DVDs ; “PRACTICAL INDIRECT COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS”, “COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS WITH SILICONE MATRIX IN ANTERIOR TOOTH FRACTURE” and ”DIRECT COMPOSITE VENEER APPLICATION” which are available from Quintessence Publishing Inc. in Turkish.

Engin Taviloğlu is a member of Executive Board for Turkish Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EDAD) and continuously shares his cases and practical information about esthetic dentistry and particularly composite applications with many dentists in a social media group  named “e-kompozit” which he has established on internet.

Description: There are many reasons for anterior fractured teeth and those cases come to us mostly in urgency. Majority of these patients are students who generally have a trauma. The patient and their relatives come to our clinic filled with panic, concerned about their looks. Under these circumstances it is the right choice to approach them nicely, explaining the procedure and start the treatment rapidly.

At the same session, restoring aesthetically the missing part of the fractured tooth using the right composite layers is one of the most satisfying moments in the professional life of a dentist. Happiness of the patient and especially of the parents suddenly removes all of the tiredness of a long and hard session.

Objectives: In this workshop we can share concepts of esthetic restorations on anterior fractured teeth with technical methods and materials accompanied nice macro video capture.

He is an active member at the International Association for Dental Research, American Dental Education Association, International Association for Dental Traumatology, Israeli Dental Association, Israeli Periodontal and Osseointegration Society and the European Federation of Periodontology.

Description: During the last years, the use of dental implants is becoming a common practice and peri-implant disease is more frequently evident. Apparently, as time goes by and also implies from the available literature, we will be seeing more and more cases of peri-implant disease. In dental trauma patients that are sometimes around their 20's when they have finished growth and implants can be installed, it should be taken into consideration that they will live with their implants for 5-7 decades. This put those patients in a rather high risk for developing peri-implant disease over time. In order to prevent and treat peri-implant disease there a need to understand the nature of this new disease and its risk factors.

This workshop will focus on causes and risk factors for peri-implant disease, ways to prevent its occurrence as well as the currently available treatment options for peri-implantitis. A special emphasis will be given to a newly developed non-surgical device that was found to be very promising in preliminary studies as preventive as well as treatment measure for peri-implant disease.

A hands-on demonstration of the mode of action of this unique water jet will follow the lecture.

Objectives:
  • Understanding the nature of peri-implant disease and it’s definition and prevalence
  • Evaluating risk factors for peri-implant disease
  • Assessing prevention methods for peri-implant disease
  • Recognizing the surgical and non-surgical treatment options for peri-implant disease
Instruction Level: Lecture and short Hands-on demonstration
